One of the mistakes we often make is to limit what we can mentally do. A lot of the time, we think that we can't mentally do some things when in reality, we were never shown how to do these things. This is especially true of mental arithmetic.

It is important therefore, in order to learn how to do mental arithmetic, that we learn the tricks and secrets of mental arithmetic. We will reveal these to you so that you will be able to:

    tick mentally add 2 numbers together,

    tick mentally subtract 2 numbers,

    tick mentally multiply a number by a 1-digit number,

    tick mentally multiply a number by a 2-digit number,

    tick mentally deal with the special case of dividing a number by 5,

    tick mentally deal with the special case of multiplying a number by 5,

    tick mentally deal with the special case of dividing a number by 2,

    tick mentally multiply a number by 11,

    tick mentally square any 2-digit number that ends in a 5,

    tick and lots more . . . all without pen and paper.

Another big mistake we make is to assume that once we know how to do something, then there is nothing more for us to do. How wrong we are!

Mental skills need regular exercises in order to be an on-going part of our mental abilities. Consider this, when you were at school, you learnt to do certain things such as trigonometry, linear equations, . . . you also learnt the Periodic Table, the balancing of chemical equations, . . . How many of these things can you remember how to do now to the extent that you could do them then?
